FTP Tips and FAQ

• An FTP site can look a lot like an HTTP, or Website, except it uses a prefix of ftp:// instead of the more commonly known, http://.

• An FTP site is similar to a large filing cabinet.  This cabinet has an organized folder structure.  This cabinet can be locked up with a virtual key, which is going to be your username and password to gain access to the folder.

• The recommended process to gain access to an FTP site is to use an FTP Client. FTP Clients allow for user-friendly uploads and downloads and give you added security in your file transfer.  Another added benefit is that a client will allow you to resume previous downloads that may have timed out or if you lost a connection to the download.

• To connect to an FTP site, you can use a standard browser such as Internet Explorer or Firefox, but uploads are more difficult, or sometimes impossible and connections lack security that would be provided by an FTP Client.

• Some of the FTP Clients that we recommend are: Cyberduck, Filezilla, CuteFTP, Transmit, and Fetch.
